Earn College Credits in High School

Jump-start your UND education by taking advanced coursework while you're still in high school.

Benefits of Advanced Coursework

  1. Earn college credits at UND - Saving time and college tuition costs.
  2. Get an early start on introductory college courses - Allowing you to graduate sooner or add a second major, a minor or elective courses to your UND education.

Explore your options to earn college credit at UND, and visit with your high school counselor or your UND admissions rep for more information.

Apply Credits to College

At UND, you may be able to apply the credits you earn to certain general education requirements, requirements of specific majors or use them as elective credits.

To see how college-level credit may apply to your major of interest or general education requirements, please reach out to an academic advisor.

Through the national College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) Program, you may take college-level courses and earn UND credit based on your AP exam score(s).

For details, visit with your high school counselor or contact:
College Board AP Program
1.888.225.5427

How to Submit Your AP Exam Score to UND

When you're ready to apply to UND, you should either:

  1. Indicate school code 6878 on the AP exam form to send your score directly to UND, or
  2. Contact the College Board to send your AP exam score directly to UND after you've received your AP exam results. A fee will apply.

UND will evaluate your AP exam score as part of your admission application process. Keep in mind that UND typically receives AP scores about one month after the College Board scores your exam. Based on your AP score and the credits earned, the equivalent UND course will be recorded on your record with a Satisfactory (S) grade. Refer to the UND Grading System for more information on S-U grading.

A score of 3 or higher on AP exams can help you earn UND credits.

You may earn UND credits if your high school participates in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. Designed for students aged 16 to 19, the IB Diploma Program's curriculum leads to final exams in 6 subject areas. IB exams are given every May and November. For details, visit with your high school counselor or contact the International Baccalaureate Organization.

How to Submit Your IB Score to UND

When you're ready to apply to UND, you have the following options:

  1. Prior to your exam results being released, ask your high school's IB coordinator to submit a transcript request to the IB on your behalf. The IB will then forward your transcript directly to UND. You may request a maximum of 6 transcripts through your school's IB coordinator at no charge, but only one can be requested for a U.S. school, or
  2. After your exam results are released, you must request the IB to send your transcripts directly to UND by completing the appropriate transcript request form. A fee will apply.

The IB should mail your official transcript(s) directly to:

UND Office of Admissions
3501 University Ave Stop 8357
Grand Forks, ND 58202-8357

UND will evaluate your IB exam score as part of your admission application process. Based on your IB score and the credits earned, the equivalent UND course will be recorded on your record with a Satisfactory (S) grade. Refer to the UND Academic Catalog for more information on S-U grading.

A score of 4 or higher on individual Higher Level IB exams can help you earn UND credits. Credit is not given for Standard Level IB Exams.

UND recognizes students who have earned the State Seal of Biliteracy regardless of the state in which it was earned and will award test credits in a world language as follows:

  • Silver Seal: 8 credits at the 101, 102 level
  • Gold Seal: 12 credits at the 101, 102, 201 level

Your academic advisor should automatically place you into LANG 201 (silver) or LANG 202 (gold) for your world language class at UND. Should a 202 course not be offered in Fall semester, you should contact the faculty Program Director in that language to determine the best placement in intermediate or advanced language courses.

Languages taught at UND:

  • French
  • German
  • Greek
  • Latin
  • Norwegian
  • Spanish

Credit earned through Seal of Biliteracy Exams may be used to fulfill University Essential Studies Breadth of Knowledge requirements, to fulfill specific course requirements, or to be used as elective credits.

Seal of Biliteracy Exam credit will NOT satisfy Essential Studies Special Emphasis requirements.

How to Submit Your State Seal of Biliteracy

Once you have been admitted to UND,

  • You may submit your request to the Office of the Registrar via the online request form.
    • You must request credit for your seal within 3 academic years after graduating from high school.
    • Students who graduate high school in 2025 are the first cohort eligible to earn these credits.

Once the request form is received, the Office of the Registrar will verify the Seal of Biliteracy on the official final high school transcript received by University Admissions.

If you're taking college-level courses through a college or university, you may transfer your credits to UND. Your school may refer to college-level courses as:

  • Dual Credit
  • Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO)
  • Early Entry
  • University in the High School Program

In general, all college-level credits attempted at institutions accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), including the American Council on Education (ACE), will be transferred to UND

Certain exceptions to this rule include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Remedial or preparatory courses
  • Credit granted for life experience by other institutions
  • Institution-based credit by exam
  • Non-degree continuing education courses

UND's academic departments will determine if the transferred credits will apply to your specific major and degree program.

Online, Enroll Anytime Courses from UND

If you're interested in taking college-level courses from UND while you're still in high school, check out UND's self-paced, enroll anytime courses. Pending your school's approval, these courses may qualify for dual credit.

How to Submit College Transcripts to UND

When you're ready to apply to UND, request the college or university where you earned the credit to send your official college transcript(s) directly to:

UND Office of Admissions
3501 University Ave Stop 8357
Grand Forks, ND 58202-8357

Typically, a high school transcript does not include the official information that is needed to properly award credit at UND, so you must obtain the transcripts directly from the college or university. Ask your counselor if you're unsure which college or university awards college-level credits at your high school.

Your college credits will be evaluated for transfer to UND as part of your admission application process.
