Fulbright Scholars

Being a Fulbright Scholar or Specialist means being part of a prestigious, highly competitive program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

About Fulbright Program

The Fulbright Program provides grants for students, scholars, and professionals to study, teach, or conduct research internationally, fostering cross-cultural exchange and academic collaboration. Fulbright Alumni continue to fulfill the Fulbright goal through outreach and service. The Fulbright Association ND Chapter encourages alumni to connect with and help support applicants to the Fulbright U.S. Student and Scholar programs.

Please email Yee Han Chu if you are a UND Fulbright alumni who would like to learn more about the institutional Alumni Association membership.

Donna Pearson, Ph.D.
Fulbright U.S. Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (2025); Fulbright U.S. Visiting Scholar Host (2025-2026)
  • Discipline: Teaching, Leadership, and Professional Practice

Countries: East Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Eurasia, the Near East, South and Central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Western Hemisphere

  • "Through the Fulbright program, I've had the honor of leading professional development and presenting at conferences in Russia and Tajikistan, where despite language limitations, I gained valuable global perspectives on education. These experiences connected me with passionate educators worldwide who, though culturally diverse, share my dedication to improving student learning—a collaborative spirit that defines the selective Fulbright/TEA community and continues to humble me."

Paul Sum, Ph.D.

Fulbright U.S. Specialist (2024-2027)
  • Discipline: Political Science

    Country: Romania

  • "I have been selected to return to Romania in Summer 2025 as a Fulbright Specialist. The Fulbright Award puts me in contact with key figures in academia and civil society to launch this initiative. Optimistically, we will forge a model that can be adopted elsewhere. The effort would not be possible without the Fulbright program that facilitates such collaboration."

Matt Knutson, Ph.D.
Fulbright U.S. Specialist (2024-2027)
  • Discipline: Competitive Gaming

  • "I hope the work I conduct while abroad sheds light on an overlooked chapter in the history of competitive gaming while putting contemporary competition in a new context. I also hope to forge new connections with professionals in my field in Europe that will serve students at UND as they break into the esports industry.”

und faculty
Aaron Kennedy, Ph.D.
Fulbright U.S. Scholar  (2024-2025)
  • Discipline: Atmospheric Science

    Country: Iceland

  • “My Fulbright experience has provided me with the perfect (extreme) environment for testing my instrumentation. I have been welcomed into the local community, and I have enjoyed the spontaneous collaborations that have arisen out of this project!”

und faculty
Ali S. Alshami, Ph.D.
Fulbright U.S. Scholar  (2024-2025)
  • Discipline: Chemical Engineering

    Country: Qatar

  • “I take great satisfaction in applying the expertise and knowledge I have gained from the United States' scientific advantage to advance membrane science technologies where they are most needed. Contributing to Qatar’s energy and water sectors through these innovations is both a fulfilling challenge and a meaningful opportunity to make a lasting impact. Without the support of the Fulbright award, these contributions would not have been possible.”

und faculty
Brian Urlacher, Ph.D.
Fulbright U.S. Specialist (2023-2026)
  • Discipline: Political Science

  • “One of the great things about working in another country is that you get to see with a fresh set of eyes.  As a leader being able to get outside of your own experiences and your own assumptions about how things should be done is really valuable.  Fulbright creates space to think about what might be possible and what might be better.”

und male faculty
Joel Runnels, Ph.D.
Fulbright U.S. Specialist  (2021-2022)
  • Discipline: Education

    Country: Israel

und male faculty

Brian Pappas, Ph.D., J.D.

Fulbright U.S. Scholar  (2021-2022)
  • Discipline: Law

    Country: Japan, Greece, and Denmark

  • "Without Fulbright, revisions to my courses and trainings to incorporate intercultural communications differences would not have been possible.  My experiences in Denmark, Japan, and Greece significantly aided in my understanding of intercultural differences and it has enabled me to be a much better instructor in this area.

Working with administrative leaders in multiple countries has enabled me to better understand intercultural differences that can arise when working in administration.  It increased my confidence and abilities in handling a wider range of circumstances with greater empathy, care, and perspective."

und faculty

Lavinia Iancu, Ph.D.

  • “My Fulbright adventure took me to Sam Houston State University, where I had the pleasure of engaging in forensic entomology research alongside dedicated colleagues. The Fulbright experience broadened my horizons, enriched my professional skills, and fostered lifelong connections. This was indeed a life-changing journey!”

Woei Hung, Ph.D.
Fulbright U.S. Scholar  (2018-2019)
  • Discipline: Educational Technology

    Country: Kyrgyzstan

  • “Through my Fulbright scholarship, I established a very positive relationship with my host university—University of Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan. I shared my expertise on innovative active learning pedagogies and educational technology with the instructors and K-12 teachers. The positive effects of the professional development workshops that I provided were reciprocal. I learned a lot from them as well. This incredible experience would not have been possible without the support and resources from Fulbright.”

It led to new research collaborations, broadened my cultural understanding, and helped me form new friendships. The program not only strengthened my professional expertise in sustainable technologies but also cultivated leadership skills through international exchange. Fulbright is more than a scholarship—it’s a transformative journey. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone with the opportunity to apply.”

These included exploring the differences in engineering education in the UK and US systems with specific recommendations on how unique aspects of one of the two systems could be adopted to improve the other system. I also developed a workshop on engagement teaching in Science and Engineering that I was able to lead multiple times in both countries. Fulbright U.S. Specialist (2009-2010)
  • Discipline: Political Science

    Country: Romania

  • “My project aims to build bridges between the social science academic community and civil society (the nonprofit sector). For many years, part of my research agenda has been to study the development of civil society in emerging democracies, and Romania, as well as other countries in Southeast Europe, has been a primary case for this work. I always felt that the academic community can offer more support to nonprofits in terms of needs assessment, program evaluation, and other research. The academic community can also support civil society more generally by highlighting the important contributions it makes to social life, so that funding agencies see the value in supporting the sector.”

  • Discipline: German and German Studies

    Country: Germany

  • "As a recipient of the Fulbright International Education Administrator Award to Germany, I had the opportunity to visit several universities in Baaden-Württemberg with colleagues from around the United States.  Through numerous discussions, activities, and casual conversations along the way, we shared pedagogical challenges, insights, and inspirations to improve the way we teach German language, literature, and culture.  One of the most impactful interactions for me was a visit with a German professor who uses theater to creative ways improve student engagement and language acquisition."
