Tax Information
1098–T Tax Form
The 1098-T reports qualified tuition and related expenses and may help you — or a parent or guardian who claims you as a dependent — determine eligibility for federal education tax credits or deductions.

Reading the 1098-T Form
Effective in 2018, the IRS requires all schools to report Payments Received in Box 1 of the 1098-T form.
Box 1 includes:
- Any payments made and applied toward qualified tuition and related fees during the calendar year.
- Any payments made in December that apply to tuition and fees for the upcoming spring semester.
- Any Aviation flight costs paid in the calendar year.
Box 2 (Charges Billed) will be blank.
The 1098-T is an informational document only. While it's required to claim a deduction for educational tax credits, it is not a direct-entry (e.g., “copy and paste") form like the W-2.
It is up to the taxpayer to claim the correct amount. Taxpayers should use their own payment records as documentation for claiming educational expenses. The Account Summary in Campus Connection can be a helpful reference for reviewing payments made.
Note: The information listed on the 1098-T is final and cannot be modified. For questions about how to use this form when filing taxes, please consult a tax professional. One-Stop Student Services cannot provide individual tax advice or assistance with tax preparation.

- One electronic form available Campus Connection for semester-based courses.
- One paper or emailed form provided by the Office of Extended Learning.
Be sure to use both forms when preparing your taxes.
For questions on about 1098-Ts related to Enroll Anytime courses, contact the Office of Extended Learning at UND.oelregister@UND.edu or 701.777.0488.
