Supporting your path to education benefits with the tools and guidance you need.

Our step-by-step guide to getting started at UND using military, veteran, or dependent education benefits. From applying to UND and submitting your VA paperwork to verifying enrollment and connecting with campus support services, here is everything you need to get started.

1. Apply to UND

Indicate service member, veteran, or military-affiliated on your UND application.

If you did not indicate your military status on your application, complete the Residency Student Status in your Campus Connection account and attach your DD-214 or COE.

*Dependents must apply for benefits under their own name.

3. Use your Benefits

Complete the Veteran Certification Application each semester you wish to use your VA education benefits at UND.

Veteran Certification Application

In order to successfully complete the application you will need to attach a copy of your COE or NOBE and Aerospace students must also submit their medical certificate. You will receive a confirmation email when successfully completed.

4. Meet with your Academic Advisor

Declare a major and have your academic advisor assist you in selecting classes that are necessary for your desired degree plan (the VA will not fund courses outside of declared degree plans).

  • Reply “YES” to opt in. The text message link will expire 14 days (about 2 weeks) after receipt, so please respond within that time frame.

6. Military Dependents

Dependents (spouses and children*) of service members/veterans can receive ND residency tuition rates at UND. Complete the Residency form,  and attach the Service Members DD-214 and Birth or Marriage Certificate.

Campus Support

UND offers a range of campus support services to help military-affiliated students thrive academically, personally, and professionally.

The “Parent” school is the institution issuing the students degree.
The “Guest” school is the institution where the student is taking credits with the expectation that those credits will be transferred.

A Parent Letter is required from the student’s degree-granting institution and is sent to the Guest school in order for a student’s credits to be submitted to the VA.  This letter allows the guest school to certify credits for a student, knowing that those credits will count towards a degree at the parent school.

Send Parent Letter (UND is the Degree-Granting Institution)

Items UND needs from the student in order to send a parent letter:

Email this information to the UND Veteran & Military Services office at vets@UND.edu.

  • Student’s Name
  • Student ID Number
  • Student’s Last 4 digits of SSN
  • GI Bill Chapter (and at what rate if applicable)
  • Guest School’s Name
  • Guest School’s VA Certifying Official’s Contact Information (name, email and phone)
  • Class Info (needed for each course taken at the guest school)
    • Class Number (ex: POLS 503)
    • Class Name (Business and Government)
    • Number of college credits issued for class

If the course doesn’t fall under the degree plan:

  • The student must provide documentation from their advisor that the course will count towards their graduation requirements.

It is up to the student to ensure that he/she is actually VA Certified at Guest School.

Awaiting Parent Letter from Another Institution (Guest School)

What does the student need to do:

  • Inform your VA Certifying Official to send a Parent Letter to UND; this is needed to verify that the courses will transfer towards the student’s degree.
  • Send the Parent Letter to UND’s Veteran & Military Services.  This will notify our office that you will be taking class(es) at UND and that your courses should be certified.

Once UND receives the Parent Letter from the school, UND will submit your Certification to the VA.
