Social Security Denial Letter

Only students who are employed are eligible for a Social Security Number. If you are not employed, but need to get a drivers license, then you need a letter stating you are not eligible for a Social Security Number. To acquire this letter, follow the steps below:

  1. Email an International Student Advisor with your name as it appears on your passport, your UND ID number, and your SEVIS ID number (found on the upper left portion of your I-20/DS-2019 and say you need a Social Security Denial Letter Request. Please allow 2-5 business days to process this request.
  2. Once the request is ready, the International Student Advisor will email you with instructions for how you can pick up the request or have it mailed to you. Note - this is a request only, it is NOT the Social Security Denial Letter and cannot be used to obtain a drivers license
  3. IMPORTANT - you will take this request to the Social Security Office. The Social Security Office must have this request to issue a Social Security Denial Letter to you.
  4. You will take the Social Security Denial Letter you received from the Social Security Office to the Department of Motor Vehicles with other necessary documentation.
