TN Employment
TN Visa Information
NAFTA is the North American Free Trade Agreement. It creates special economic and trade relationships for the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The nonimmigrant NAFTA Professional (TN) visa allows citizens of Canada and Mexico to temporarily work as NAFTA Professionals in the United States. One must be a Canadian or Mexican citizen to apply for the NAFTA Professional (TN) visa.
NAFTA lists 63 professions as eligible for TN visas. Among these professions are university teachers, scientists, research assistants, computer systems analysts, librarians, and medical professionals.
The procedures for obtaining TN status differ for citizens of Canada and Mexico. The procedures for obtaining a TN visa at a US Port of Entry are outlined here and see a sample Employment Letter.
Time and Duration Limitations for TN Visas
Both Canadian and Mexican citizens can be admitted to the United States in TN status in increments of up to 3 years. An extension of the TN visa may be granted for one year.
