Transferring Schools

If you are an international student transferring from UND to another U.S. institution of higher education, you must take the following steps to transfer your SEVIS because only one school can have access to your SEVIS record at any one time.

  1. Once you have been formally admitted to a different university, you should provide the acceptance letter to the International Center. The new institution may have a transfer form for you to complete as well.
  2. You will need both the letter of admission and the transfer form when you meet with your international student advisor at UND.
  3. Your advisor will then update your SEVIS record with a "release date" (most likely the end of your current semester). Please allow 2-5 business days for the International Center to process your transfer request. Only once that request is processed and the release date has passed will your new school be able to access your SEVIS record and issue you a new I-20 form.

If you are leaving the U.S. during a vacation period, you must make sure that you use your new I-20 when you re-enter the U.S. after your trip. Please contact your International Student Advisor at UND if you have questions about the transfer process.

If you are an international student transferring to UND from another U.S. institution of higher education, see our Transfer Instructions and New Transfer Guide for the necessary steps.
