Accessibility: A - Z

The University of North Dakota provides a broad selection of teaching and learning technologies designed to support the diverse needs of faculty, staff, and students. Many of these tools include built-in accessibility features to ensure content is usable by everyone. The Teaching Transformation and Development Academy (TTaDA) is available to help faculty identify and implement the most appropriate technologies for their classrooms, while also offering guidance and support for accessibility.

Accessibility Assistance Ticket

TTaDA has created a ticketed request form faculty can submit to receive help with accessibility issues in their course documents. 

Accessibility Lab

To  assist faculty and staff with creating accessible content, TTaDA has created an Accessibility Lab. The Accessibility Lab is located in O'Kelly Hall, Room 301.

Blackboard Ally

Blackboard Ally is a tool that integrates with UND's learning management system to help instructors make digital course content more accessible. It supports inclusive learning by offering alternative formats and accessibility insights.

Blackboard Ultra

Blackboard Ultra documents are content pages where instructors can combine text, images, audio, and video into a single, organized lesson or resource. These documents are easy to create and share, helping deliver course materials in a clear, accessible format.

Deque University

Deque University is an online training platform focused on digital accessibility. It helps users build knowledge and skills to create accessible web and digital content.

Excel

Microsoft Excel is a data organization and analysis tool with built-in accessibility options. It supports screen readers and keyboard navigation to ensure usability for all.

Infobase

Infobase is an online training resource that is available to all UND students, faculty and staff, providing a robust library of eLearning content—including creating accessible digital content. 

JAWS

JAWS - Job Access With Speech, is a popular screen reader, developed for computer users whose vision loss prevents them from seeing screen content or navigating with a mouse. JAWS provides speech and Braille output for the most popular computer applications on your PC.

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a communication and collaboration platform that includes accessibility features like live captions and keyboard navigation. It supports inclusive remote teamwork and learning.

NVDA

NVDA - NonVisual Desktop Access is a free screen reader developed for Windows computer users with vision loss. It enables accessible navigation of computer content through speech output.

Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is a tool for managing email, calendars, and tasks. It includes accessibility features that help users stay organized and connected.

PDFs

PDFs (Portable Document Format) are files that preserve the layout and formatting of documents across different devices and platforms. However, PDFs can be challenging to make accessible, requiring careful tagging and formatting to ensure they work well with screen readers and other assistive technologies.

PowerPoint

PowerPoint is a presentation tool used to create and share visual content. It supports accessible design practices to make presentations more inclusive.

Qualtrics

Qualtrics is an online survey tool available to the UND community that supports accessible survey creation. Its design helps ensure usability for all respondents, including those with disabilities.

Simple Syllabus

Simple Syllabus is a platform for creating and managing course syllabi that integrates with Blackboard. It’s designed to meet WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards.

Vevox

Vevox is an interactive polling tool that enables participants to respond to polls and surveys in real time. It integrates with platforms like PowerPoint, Teams, Zoom, and Blackboard, helping educators assess knowledge, maintain attention, gather feedback, and boost participation. 

VoiceOver

VoiceOver is Apple’s built-in screen reader that enables users to interact with their devices through spoken descriptions and keyboard or braille navigation.

VoiceThread

VoiceThread is an interactive platform that allows students and faculty to share and discuss media (e.g. images, videos, PDFs, and more) using text, audio, and video comments. It offers flexible participation options that promote accessibility for diverse learners.

Word

Microsoft Word is a word processing program that helps users create accessible documents. It includes tools that support inclusive formatting and content creation.

YuJa

All students, faculty, and staff have access to a personal YuJa account, allowing them to host video content and record video lectures for curriculum use. YuJa automatically applies various accessibility features to videos upon upload, with options for further modifications to enhance accessibility. 

Zoom

All UND students, faculty, and staff have access to a personal Zoom account with a pro-level license, providing robust tools to create an inclusive virtual environment. Zoom offers a range of accessibility features designed to support individuals with diverse needs.
