YuJa
Manage Media View | Create a Recording | Edit Videos Using the Video Editor | Blackboard Integration | Additional Features | Analytics | Need Help?
All students, faculty, and staff have access to a personal YuJa account, allowing them to host video content and record video lectures for curriculum use.
Where Do I Start?
You can log into the YuJa platform either through Blackboard or directly outside of it. Faculty and staff should first log in to YuJa via Blackboard to create their YuJa account. This ensures that their account is created with appropriate permissions and storage.
The Getting Started with the Video Platform in Blackboard help article provides instructions for using YuJa within Blackboard courses.
No download is needed to view video content in YuJa. However, to record for the first time, you must install the YuJa Software Capture for Mac/PC. Many features, including recording, are also available via the mobile app. You can use screen capture or your webcam and microphone to create recordings, which can be shared via email, Blackboard, or on the UND YuJa site. See the System Requirements page for more details.
You only need to install the YuJa Software Capture once, but it’s important to keep it updated to avoid sync issues. Uninstall older versions and install the latest version for best performance. Windows users will receive update notifications, but this is not currently available to Mac users.
For more information, consult the Knowledge Base article on Downloading and Installing the YuJa Software Station.
Manage Media View
Manage Media includes a suite of tools to organize, store and manage media for your organization within the Video Platform. This includes the ability to organize content into Media Channels, search and maintain media collections, share media, upload media, caption both uploaded and Platform-created content, and use the Video Editor.
See the Managing Media Overview help article for more details.
You can manage a variety of media content in YuJa using the tools in Manage Media. These tools allow you to edit, share, publish, and delete video content.
See the Managing Existing Media help article for details.
Platform users can view media in any browser or on mobile devices through Media Channels, Manage Media, or the Mobile App. The Media Player is fully accessible and offers customization options for both users and organizations. While many users will use the Media Channels as their primary means of viewing media content, they can also be used by content creators. The Media Channels are fully integrated into the Manage Media suite and serve as the default view when logging into the Platform.
For more details, see the Watching Media help article.
Users can upload files through Manage Media. Uploaded files may be auto-captioned and accessed like those created with the Software Capture application or the Hardware Hub.
For more information on how to upload media, see the Uploading Media help article.
Publishing enables users to access media through the Media Channels, including All Channels, Shared Folders, and EnterpriseTube. Media can be unpublished from a Media Channel so that it is no longer visible to viewers. However, the content itself is not deleted from the content owner’s My Media collection.
YuJa enables you to download created content, such as captures and uploaded media, using tools available in Manage Media. Downloads are also available through the Media Player.
For more details, see the Knowledge Base article YuJa: Enable Downloads for All Videos in Course Media Channel.
Deleting media removes content from both your Media Collection and any associated locations where it is shared or published, sending it to the YuJa recycle bin. You can restore content from the recycle bin within 30 days of deletion.
For more help, see the Knowledge Base article on YuJa Media Management and Content Clean Up.
Allow Students to Download Media
By default, media is not set to allow student downloads. To enable this, you’ll need to change the settings.
See the Downloading Media help article.
Allow Students to Publish to a Course in YuJa
Instructors can set permissions to allow students to publish to a specific course in YuJa.
Bulk Media Management
Media content can be managed individually or through bulk media management options, which allows for efficient tasks in publishing, sharing, and tagging. See the Using Bulk Media Management help article for details.
Storage Quotas
Your YuJa account has a limited amount of storage, similar to other campus systems. Media will remain on your account until they are deleted by the instructor. UND has set the following storage quotas:
- Instructors: 150 GB total storage
- Students: 10 GB total storage
To help maintain digital course materials, we encourage instructors to only keep active course content for the current semester. This aids in avoiding references to redundant or outdated content. Content no longer in use should be downloaded and removed from YuJa.
To check your account’s storage usage:
- Click your avatar in the upper-right corner and select My Account.
- Expand the My Profile navigation on the left side of the screen.
- Select Storage Usage to view your used and available storage.
Use this information to manage your content and stay within your storage limit. For more information on cleaning up your course content, visit our Knowledge Base article on Identifying, Bulk Downloading, and Storing Media from YuJa.
Content Retention Schedules
In an effort to keep our storage at appropriate levels in the YuJa system, the following process will be implemented approximately six weeks after the end of each semester to remove inactive content:
- Student Recordings: remain active for one full semester after the semester in which they were recorded
- Instructor Recordings: remain active until they have had no views for two years
- YuJa Proctored Recordings: moved to archive storage at the end of each semester
Note: Moving recordings to archive storage will break recording links.
All student and instructor recordings that have been moved to archive storage and have not been restored to active content will be permanently deleted after one year of being in archive storage. All YuJa proctor recordings that have not been restored to active content will be permanently deleted after three months of being in archive storage. After that time, those recordings will no longer be able to be restored.
If you have affected recordings, an email notification will be sent listing all the content being moved to archive storage. This message is sent at the time of content archival. This message will come from noreply@YuJa.com.
Below is a sample message:
Hi John,
The below files have been moved to archive storage by the TTaDA team. Your content
is still available to restore to your My Media. Archive files can be located under
My Archive in your YuJa account. Proctored recordings will stay in archive storage
for two months. All other recordings will be left in archive storage for one year
before being permanently deleted. For more information and instructions on restoring
recordings from archive storage, please see the Content Retention Schedule webpage.

If a recording has been moved from active storage to archive storage and you need to have it restored before it is permanently deleted, you can restore it.
For more information on this process, see the Knowledge Base article on YuJa Archive Restoration.
Create a Recording
Create Recording offers essential tools to access, install, and manage both Software and Hardware Capture. These tools can be found under the Create Recording option at the top of the screen.
See the Creating a Recording help article for more details.
Edit Videos Using the Video Editor
YuJa offers fully integrated video editing capabilities that are accessible from Manage Media. Video editing allows Content Creators to create professional and polished media content, free from extraneous material. The Video Editor is non-destructive, saving edits as a new file and preserving the original media. For more details, see the Knowledge Base article on Editing YuJa Recordings or watch the Using the Video Editor video.
Actions you can perform in the Video Editor include:
Cut Content | The Cut Tool lets you remove specific sections of a video. |
---|---|
Add Telestrations | Telestrations let you draw on your media to highlight key information. |
Adjust Audio Levels | Adjust Audio Gain to correct low audio levels and set a baseline volume; users can still adjust the volume via the device or Media Player. |
Insert a Video | Enhance your video by inserting another video within it. |
Insert a Slide | Insert slides to add new information or create Title Cards using images. |
Insert Text Overlay | Use Text Overlay to add supplemental information to your media. |
Remove a Video Stream | Remove a stream from a multi-stream recording created with Software Capture. For instance, you might preserve the PowerPoint while removing the speaker. |
Edit Video Chapters | Edit Video Chapters and/or Indexes associated with longer media recordings. |
Use Image Tools | YuJa offers Watermark and Blur tools to add branding or obscure parts of an image. Changes apply after the video re-processes. |
Use Undo and Save | Manage edits by using Undo to revert the latest edit or Save to finalize changes. |
Edit Captions | Edit auto-captioned videos. Users can add, modify, delete, and adjust timestamps. |
Blackboard Integration
YuJa seamlessly integrates with Blackboard, enabling you to:
Within Blackboard, content creators can create assignments that allow other users to submit video responses using the YuJa LTI. Assignments are typically created in the Content area but can also be added to Learning Modules, Lesson Plans, and folders. Instructions and file attachments needed for the assignment are provided at the time of creation.
See the Creating Video Assignments with Blackboard help article for details.
YuJa allows content creators to link Video Quizzes in Blackboard to seamlessly sync grade results between both systems. In order to achieve this, each unique Blackboard Content item must be linked to a corresponding Video Quiz.
For detailed instructions, refer to the Integrating Video Quizzes with Blackboard Content Items for Gradebook Sync help article.
Additional Features
Beyond creating, editing, and sharing content with students, YuJa offers unique features, including:
The YuJa Mobile App enables access to YuJa Media Channels, Mobile Capture, and Mobile Upload. The YuJa Mobile App is available for both Android and iOS devices, tablets, and smartphones. All features of the YuJa Mobile App are accessible through a single, easy-to-navigate menu. Upon opening, the YuJa Mobile App shows a summary view of all courses, making it simple to manage and access content on the go.
With YuJa, you have the ability to create or take a video quiz (a YuJa video embedded with quiz questions that appear as the video plays). Instructors can incorporate these video quizzes into a Blackboard module as a "check for understanding" component, or they can be added to the Blackboard Grade Center as an Assignment.
YuJa Exam Proctoring allows students to record video/audio and their computer screen while completing an exam. The recordings are stored in a centralized instructor folder, ensuring that the exam recordings are not distributed by the student.
Enabling Exam Proctoring using Software Capture
Exam Proctoring ensures the security of student exams taken remotely by allowing instructors to record video during the exam. The Proctor Recorder ensures that the recording is securely stored in a centralized instructor folder, which prevents student distribution of the exam recording. In order for the Proctor Recorder to appear, Content Creators (Instructors) need to enable the Proctor setting within their respective courses.
YuJa Proctoring with Respondus LockDown Browser
For an added layer of exam security, Respondus LockDown Browser can be used in conjunction with YuJa Proctoring.
Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure, custom web browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard; test-takers are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. Instructors may opt to add exceptions (e.g., allow printing or access to a certain web page). Once an assessment is started, students are locked into the exam until they submit it for grading. Respondus is compatible with both Mac and Windows.
How to Get Started with YuJa Proctoring for Students
Before using YuJa proctoring for the first time, students must download and install the YuJa Software Capture application. This application captures both the screen and the webcam to record the student's exam session, which is then shared with you, the instructor. YuJa Software Capture is a one-time download, so students won’t need to repeat this process for every exam.
See the How to Get Started with YuJa Proctoring for Students help article for details.
Microsoft PowerPoint allows users to embed videos into slides.
For step-by-step instructions on how to embed a YuJa video (including subtitles) into a PowerPoint slide deck, refer to the Embedding a YuJa Video into a Microsoft PowerPoint help article.
Analytics
In order to collect user-specific viewing data in YuJa, the video must be correctly linked in Blackboard using the YuJa Blackboard integration. See the YuJa Content Sharing help article for details.
Types of data you can collect:
-
User Analytics: User Analytics offers a breakdown of participation by class or group, including views and total play length. For more details, refer to the User Analytics help article.
-
Content Analytics: Content Analytics provides insights into individual media files and user interactions, including an overall summary, specific data on views, browsers, operating systems, and a segment-by-segment breakdown of content viewing patterns. See the Content Analytics help article for details.
-
Group Analytics: Group Analytics gives you information on historical cumulative views, unique views, and popular videos, available on either a group-by-group or overall basis. See the Groups Analytics help article for details.
Access Summary Analytics for Individual Media
Content Creators and Administrators can access Summary Analytics and more detailed Content Analytics directly from the Media Details pane for individual media content. The traditional Analytics view is still available through the Main Menu. Summary Analytics provide information about views, viewing behavior, and additional information.
See the Accessing Summary Analytics help article for details.
