Writing a Syllabus

Getting Started with Writing a Syllabus

  • Establish course and lesson goals/objectives. What should students know or be able to do as a result of taking the course.
  • Design your course utilizing Backwards Course Design. The Course Design Matrix and Course Checklist can guide you in the process.
  • Create a dynamic syllabus using CourseLeaf SYL with updated University policies that you can copy over and easily update.  CourseLeaf SYL is integrated with Blackboard and meets accessibility and UND Marketing standards.
  • If creating your own stand alone syllabus outside of CourseLeaf SYL, use our Syllabus Template. The template contains some syllabus best practices, examples and official University policies. The syllabus has also been formatted for accessibility and approved by UND Marketing.
