Writing a Syllabus
Getting Started with Writing a Syllabus
- Establish course and lesson goals/objectives. What should students know or be able to do as a result of taking the course.
- Design your course utilizing Backwards Course Design. The Course Design Matrix and Course Checklist can guide you in the process.
- Create a dynamic syllabus using Simple Syllabus with updated University policies that you can copy over and easily update. Simple Syllabus is integrated with Blackboard and meets accessibility and UND Marketing standards.
- If creating your own stand alone syllabus outside of Simple Syllabus:
- Use our Syllabus Template. The template contains some syllabus best practices, examples and official University policies. The syllabus has also been formatted for accessibility and approved by UND Marketing. Please note the highlighted sections of the template contain examples and should be updated with information pertaining to your course or deleted.
- Comply with the latest accessibility guidelines, by ensuring your syllabus is screen-reader friendly. For directions on how to make your syllabus and other course materials accessible visit the Create Accessible Content page on the TTaDA website.
