Cost of Attendance
Your Cost of Attendance (COA) is an estimate of the expenses you are likely to incur during the academic year while attending UND.
The COA is an estimate of school related direct and indirect expenses a full-time (12 credits per semester) student can expect to have for the academic year, or semester of enrollment. The COA – sometimes referred to as a “student budget” serves two purposes:
- To give you an estimate of the total cost to attend UND for one year, and
- To set a limit on the amount of financial aid you can receive. Your total aid (scholarships, loans, grants, waivers, work-study) cannot exceed your total COA.
Because the Cost of Attendance is an estimate, your actual expenses may be different from what is estimated. In addition, the COA will consider residency status, living arrangements, and in some cases, the student’s major.
Direct vs. Indirect Costs
Direct Costs (Billed by UND)
- Tuition and Fees
- Housing and food (on-campus)
Indirect Costs (Not Billed by UND)
- Books and supplies
- Transportation Expenses
- Professional licensure/certification
- Miscellaneous/Personal Expenses
All costs are subject to change without notice and are expected to increase annually. The Cost of Attendance is based on estimated figures and may not accurately reflect an individual students costs. The combination of the direct and indirect costs will be used to determine financial aid. *Please note, this rate is based on reported average costs for all undergraduate students.
The Cost of Attendance is based on estimated figures, and as such, it may not accurately reflect an individual student's costs. For this reason, a student may appeal or request an adjustment to the COA.
UND Student Costs
Applicable to all UND undergraduate, graduate and professional students.
The average cost of base tuition* and mandatory fees is based on full-time enrollment projections. Actual costs for a student will vary depending on the student’s major, residency and total number of credits the student is enrolled in for that semester.
*Differential Tuition is assessed to students in selected programs to cover the costs of additional resources and facilities associated with those programs. The differential tuition replaces the base tuition for those programs.
Tuition and Fee Rates (Estimated for 24-25 Aid Year)
Tuition rates are based on 12 credits per semester for the fall and spring, unless otherwise noted. Tuition rates for summer are based on 9 credits per semester, unless otherwise noted.
Mandatory Student Fees
Mandatory fees support costs that are associated with services, activities, facilities and infrastructure that support students outside the classroom. Fees are required for on-campus and online students.
Maximum Fees Per Semester
The UND Student Fees have a maximum cost of $857.16 based on 12 credits. Students taking less than 12 credits, will be assessed the UND Student Fee at a rate of $71.43 per credit.
UND Student Fees | $718.68 |
---|---|
Technology Fee | $72 |
Connect ND Fees | $66 |
NDSA Fee | $0.48 |
Student Fees
The amount of the fee represents an average cost based on the estimated number of students, mix of full-time versus part time enrollments and the overall estimated cost of services, activities, facilities and infrastructure. The needs of both on-campus and online students are taken into consideration and all students are charged based on the number of credits enrolled each semester.
Examples of costs supported by student fees include:
- Student Government
- Student Health and Wellness
- Bonds
- Technology
- Memorial Union
- Career Services
- Substance Abuse Prevention Programming
- Multicultural Programs and Services
- Athletics
- Judicial/Crisis Team
Increases to the UND Student Fees are indexed to the rate of the approved tuition increase up to a maximum of 5%. Any increase above the 5% is approved by the President under SBHE Policy 805.2 section 1.b.
New Student Fee
All incoming undergraduate students will pay a one-time, nonrefundable new incoming student fee ($185) to cover the costs of services and events such as New Student Orientation, Welcome Weekend and the U Card (student ID). The fee will be assessed with their first-semester tuition costs.
Incoming graduate, law, medical, collaborative, LAUNCH and non-degree students are exempt from the new student fee. UND employees who begin an undergraduate degree program and use the employee waiver benefit will receive a waiver of the new student fee.
Auditing a Class
The fee for auditing a class (taking for no credit) will be 50% of the regular, per hour tuition charge for that course. Mandatory fees are not charged.
Collaborative Students
A collaborative student is one who is earning their degree from UND and chooses to enroll in courses at another North Dakota University System (NDUS) institution within the same term. The institution from which the student is earning a degree is considered the "home institution." The institution that supplies the courses for a degree is considered the "provider institution(s)."
The student pays tuition/fees to their home institution (UND) for the collaborative courses. The cost information is received from the provider institution, and this additional amount will be included on the student's account balance at UND. Collaborative courses are not subject to the UND tuition cap.

- To prepare students for the National Certification Examination (NCE) experience.
UND's Tuition Model
UND moved to a new tuition model to increase transparency and simplicity for students. One of the new model's benefits is that most program and course fees have been rolled into the tuition rates so students know what to expect on their bills. Please see Tuition Model FAQs for full details.
Changes to tuition and fees are governed by State Board of Higher Education (SBHE) Policy 805.1 and 805.3. Waiver of mandatory fees is governed by SBHE Policy 820.
*Tuition and fees are subject to change.
