Our world is shaped largely by visual perception. The UND Art & Design students study the ways in which we perceive, create and interpret visual information. By working in creative studios with innovative faculty and peers, you’ll find your niche at UND. Prepare for graduate study or a career as an artist with a degree in visual arts from UND!
You'll begin with core coursework that helps you become familiar with key elements in visual design. From there, you're able to steer your academic direction towards specific interests. By combining classes from all areas of art with UND’s Essential Studies program, you’ll gain a well-rounded liberal arts education. Some areas you’ll study are:
- Two-dimensional media (drawing, painting, photography, printmaking and graphic design)
- Three-dimensional (jewelry and metalsmithing, ceramics, sculpture and fibers)
- Animation/digital time-based media
- Art history
- Art education
Students also have access to the 35,000 square foot Hughes Fine Arts Center. This center provides an optimal learning environment for fine arts with an expansive collection of former student’s work and technical studios for metal-casting, graphic design and much more.
Travel abroad, conduct research, or join a mock trial team. Getting involved at UND is part of the college experience. Use your experience to deeper understand your course material or just have fun.
The Visiting Artist Program at UND regularly brings regionally, nationally and internationally recognized artists to campus — allowing for further student interaction with professionals in the field.
Use your artist’s touch and work to get the career you’ve always wanted. Whether it’s teaching art to young children, or opening your own studio, you’ll get the start and education you need at UND. Recent graduates have found work as:
- Professional artist/ art practitioner
- Graduate studies (i.e. B.F.A. in visual arts)
- Art educator
- Museum/gallery curator
